Sherwin Williams Neutral Ground Kitchen Cabinets

August 14, 2021 16 Comments

When it comes to kitchen cabinet paint, there are a ton of options! There are colors for every style and personality. One choice that is often overlooked though is Sherwin Williams Neutral Ground. This neutral color will make your cabinets look chic, timeless, and sophisticated. Let’s take a look at why you should choose neutral ground from Sherwin Williams to paint your kitchen cabinets!

Old Oak cabinets painted in Sherwin Williams Neutral Ground

Sherwin Williams Neutral Ground (7568) is a classic color. With neutral ground, you can enjoy the beauty of your cabinets without feeling overwhelmed or out of style. It’s timeless and beautiful!

Your kitchen will look fresh with these light colors on the walls contrasted by white cabinetry. There aren’t any restrictions to what you can do with neutral ground on your cabinetry. You could keep the cabinets light and airy, or add some contrast to them by adding a dark color for the trim!

Sherwin Williams Neutral Ground Undertones

Sherwin Williams Neutral Ground undertones are somewhat neutral in comparison to the rest of their colors. This means that it will blend well with most other colors you might choose for your kitchen!

What is the LRV of Neutral Ground?

The LRV, or light reflectance value, is 70-71%. This means that the paint will be very reflective and won’t absorb much natural lighting in your kitchen!

If you’re looking for a new cabinet color that’s chic but classic, Sherwin Williams Neutral Ground should be at the top of your list. With its many undertones and LRV score, this classic paint can go with anything!

What color goes with Neutral Ground from Sherwin Williams?

Surprise, surprise- Neutral Ground goes well with other neutrals! Consider pairing this color with other creamy gray, beige, or brown tones.

I recommend these colors:

  • Creamy
  • Mindful Gray
  • Edgecomb Gray

Sherwin Williams Neutral Ground Cabinets: Before & After

Sherwin Williams Neutral Ground has been on my list of favorite cabinet paint colors for years! And, with before and after pictures like these, it’s easy to see why, right?!

Let’s take a look at what the cabinets look like before we painted them…

oak cabinets with white formica countertops, raised panel oak cabinets

These honey-colored oak cabinets were 25-30 years old. The homeowners were tired of the dark and dated feel of their kitchen and were ready for a new look.

Along with being outdated, the cabinets showed many signs of wear. The original finish on the wood banding around the countertop was worn completely bare. So the bare wood had been absorbing oil, grease, and water for years.

orange colored kitchen cabinets with light counter tops

I’m not sure who originally came up with putting a wood edge around kitchen countertops, but it was a terrible idea!

And, in the photo below, you can also see where the original finish was failing around the base cabinets next to the floor. Decades of mopping the floor next to the cabinets finally took the finish right off leaving bare wood exposed.

(If you have oak cabinets you are considering painting, take a look at this guide I put together full of my best tips for painting oak cabinets. Trust me- you’ll need them!)

Like many people lately, these homeowners were trying to modernize their dated all-brown decor from the early 2000s by bringing in gray tones.

The tumbled travertine backsplash had several gray and brown tones throughout, so it was simple to bring out the griege and putty colors.

The Paint Colors We Chose To Use On Honey Oak Cabinets

We chose Sherwin Williams Neutral Ground for the cabinets and Sherwin Williams Intellectual Gray for the kitchen walls. And, to really tie in the darker gray colors from the floor, I mixed a custom dark-charcoal glaze to pinstripe the cabinets with.

I love to use General Finishes Glaze Effects for this application. I mixed Black, Van Dyke Brown, and a bit of white paint to make the dark charcoal color.

Tip: You can visit this post to learn about my process for pinstripe glazing cabinets!

Of course, new hardware was a must. Just look at those old brass pulls!

The new pulls add a perfect modern touch!

The light switch covers were oak too…I didn’t ask, but I assume they will change them out sometime soon.

Here are some awesome side-by-side before and after shots so you can see what an upgrade we were able to give this kitchen. The homeowners were so happy!

How much of each color for the glaze to get the charcoal color? What brand and specific white did you use?

    How many pints/gallons?

My counter has the wood edge like this kitchen. My cabinets are Hickory wood. Did they get a new counter top or was that one painted somehow?

Did you still use the PPG paint, and just tint it the SW color? This is gorgeous!
