Big Kitchen Refresh On A Tiny Budget!

May 12, 2020 10 Comments

Looking for a budget-friendly kitchen update? Here’s how I refreshed an outdated kitchen for under $300!

Big Kitchen Update with a tiny budget! See how this kitchen was totally transformed with under $300 spent!

I know you gotta love dramatic before and after photos as much as I do, right? There’s something intensely satisfying about seeing a stark contrast between an ugly before and the gorgeous after. And if the before and after transformation is achieved with very little money, well then that’s really exciting! Here’s how we gave this kitchen a big refresh on a tiny budget…

This is Kaity’s kitchen. Kaity has worked with me here at Painted By Kayla Payne LLC since 2016. Due to the virus, our schedule has been a little slower recently, and Kaity’s been wanting her own kitchen cabinets re-painted for a while…so it was the perfect time to tackle it! ((If you want to read about our process for repainting cabinets, click here for the post!))

And here’s how her kitchen looks now!

Isn’t that CRAZY!? This is why painting gets me so jazzed – In less than 4 days we made this kitchen look completely different!! Less than $300 and a lot of elbow grease and Kaity had a totally different looking space!

It’s so empowering to know anyone can take a small spark of an idea, take action on that idea, AND CREATE beauty out of literally anything! Does that exhilarate you as much as it does me?!?! 🎉🤯🙌🏼

The Cost

We didn’t set a dollar amount before starting this project, we just knew that we wanted it to be cheap! I knew that repainting the cabinets and walls would give us a HUGE change, but I wanted to dress it up with a few small items that would be functional but also pretty. A little bit of decor in the kitchen can go a long way to dress it up! I found many things at different flea markets and resale shops!

Kaity is pleased as punch to have a brighter kitchen where she loves to bake goodies for her hubby and two boys! Yes, it’s just some paint and decor, but to her (and me) it’s so much more than that…it’s a beautiful and cozy haven to live in – and enjoy doing so ❤️

Thank you for showing real kitchens in real homes. I recognized the countertop…my last house had it. The colors really compliment the counter and really update the look of the kitchen. I have never seen the “trick” with the silver sharpie….amazing!!!! She must love her new kitchen.

I see no cost for the backsplash tiles. You didnt paint those, did you? Interested to know cost or if you painted. Doesnt look like its possible from the first picture.

We painted the existing backsplash (which was just laminate) then drew lines on it to mimic subway tile…cost was a couple bucks for the sharpie

As a long time renter I have had the same countertops as Kaity and they don’t look good with much! This is an amazing makeover! The faux subway tile was genius. Love it.

Looks great! Thanks for sharing. I have a similar small kitchen. I want to move the range over against the cabinets and have a narrow cabinet and counter between the range and refrigerator. (And remove the lazy Susan corner cabinet.)
What do you have in the corner to the left of the range? Maybe a cabinet-insert that angles and pulls out ?
    Thanks for the help!
