American of Martinsville Console in Kendall Charcoal

April 28, 2016 3 Comments

Hey guys!  I’m back with another glossy piece of furniture.  Remember me telling you about some furniture that my friend Sucheta bought on my behalf from St. Louis MO?  You can read about that here if not:)  This American of Martinsville console was part of that furniture haul.  I am like 99% sure this was the base to a china cabinet, but somewhere in time the top was broken, forgotten, lost, thrown away etc…..??  It made me very, very sad not to have the top portion of the cabinet because, well, you can find out why in this post.  Anyway, the dimensions to this piece were pretty odd since there was no top.  It was very low to the ground, but it made it the perfect option for a media console!

This guy gave me some problems.  I first sprayed it with a color from Rust-Oleum called Almond.  I don’t have any photos of it, but just trust me….it was ugly.  So ugly.  I sanded all of that off as soon as it cured, and primed it again.  On the second go around, I sprayed it with Sherwin Williams Industrial Enamel Gloss in Navel (it’s a really pretty shade of navy) BUT it was also so ugly!!  I didn’t thin the paint enough to make it lay down nicely from my spray gun which left me with epic orange peel.  I don’t have a picture of this “whoopsie” either, sorry.  It looked like a blue navel orange!!  So, I sanded it off as well.  Sometimes that’s just how it goes!  For the third try, I used Fine Paints of Europe Hollandlac Brilliant mixed in Benjamin Moore Kendall Charcoal.  This color is always a winner in my book.

Lacy took these pictures in December.  Look closely and you can see the reflection of the Christmas Tree. I love the gloss of this paint!!

Anyone else out there have to fail multiple times before you win?!

I love this color so much!! I had loved it for a long time but your console pushed it into “must try” category. As you know, my attempt to self mix it was a fail. I will just have to order it and find a project for it.

The piece looks gorgeous Kayla! Love it!!

Such a great color, KP! I think I may need to try something like this on an upcoming piece. I am sorry, for your sake, that the hutch was missing. 🙂
