Stanley Faux Bamboo Dresser in White Dove

June 8, 2016 24 Comments

Hello my friends!  Hope everyone’s week is going well so far.  Just dropping in tonight for a quick before and after of this vintage Stanley faux bamboo dresser.  I owe this score to my friend, Sucheta!  She is the master of finding the best pieces on Craigslist, so I asked her to look through my local CL (she and I live 3+ hours away from each other) and what do ya know, she found this dresser within about 30 seconds!!

Vintage faux bamboo Stanley Dresser

This super awesome dresser made by Stanley was in excellent shape!  The lady we bought it off of told me that she bought it brand new from the furniture showroom in 1971 and it’s sat in her house in the same bedroom ever since!  She was the most precious lady:)  We struck up a nice conversation for half an hour after we loaded the dresser into our truck.  At some point while talking, she mentioned that she had a tall chest of drawers that matched this dresser that she just hadn’t decided to sell quite yet.  She said she was on the fence about getting rid of it.  She took note of my reaction to her mentioning the matching piece and asked me if I’d like to go into the house to see it.  Before the question fully left her mouth I was headed past her to her door!  Yes, yes I would very much like to see the matching piece!!!!  Sure enough, there was an equally beautiful tall chest of drawers right there.  I practically begged her to please call, text, email, snail mail me if she decided to sell it.  As we left her that day, she gave us all ice cream sandwiches and big hugs.  Seriously, she was the most kind stranger I’ve ever met. (Spoiler alert: She emailed me the next week saying I could buy it.  That post will be coming soon:)

I listed this piece for sale for custom painting in my Etsy store.  A lady in Houston TX bought it and requested Benjamin Moore’s White Dove.  I had that color mixed in Fine Paints of Europe Hollandlac Brilliant.  The gloss just knocks my socks off every time.  She also requested that I leave the hardware in the original condition.  I’ll be honest, I was not excited about leaving the hardware this way because I truly love polishing vintage brass, but I’m so happy to say that I really did like it in the end!!    I sprayed one coat of oil base primer and 3 coats of Hollandlac and here is the after!

I was so pleased with the final result!  I hope my customer loves it for many years to come.  What do you guys think?  I know high gloss isn’t favored by everyone, but man, I just love it so much!   xo kayla

High gloss looks great on this particular piece. It makes it look glammy and is a nice change up from the usual rustic distressed look. Kayla, I am hosting a new link party and would love to have you join us. It is called Sweet Inspiration and open Fridays at 10am est and runs till Tuesday.

I love the way this turned out. I think your choice of the high gloss paint fits the style of the dresser. Great job.

This is beautiful! Did you use a sprayer for this? What kind of sprayer do you use if so?

    Thanks!

Chelsea, I use a Devilbiss Finish Line 3 HVLP gun with my compressor at 40PSI (I have about 13-14scfm @40PSI which is super important). Hope this helps! xo

Is it hard to learn to use that sprayer? Does the oil paint have strong fumes?

Hi Nancy, I would say that the gun is not easy to use….especially when using oil. And yes, the paint have a strong smell:(

I have the matching nightstand I’ve toyed with painting. After seeing your results, I’m all in now. Any tricks on removing the small nails that hold the brass caps on?

Love This!!!! Im unclear on the, “Fine Paints of Europe Hollandlac Brilliant”, is this an enamel that you mix your paint with? And if so…is there a retailer that you suggest?

    Thank you!!!

This high gloss look is EXACTLY what I want to achieve! I have a buffet that II’m doing in a Benjamin Moore Orange, and want to make it super high gloss!

Hey Christina, Hollandlac Brilliant is the name of the paint. It’s from the company Fine Paints of Europe. You can order it from their website! xo

I’m curious what makes their paints more special? Why did you make the choice to go with this brand?

Hi Sherry! Mostly it’s just my personal opinion and preference that this paint is better. I choose this brand because it’s the glossiest oil paint on the market hands down! It’s highly pigmented and the pigments are ground so finely…that’s another reason its superior to some other brands. All in all, I just really like it:) Thanks for your comment! xo
